At Cub Creek Science Camp, our goal is to create an environment where a child's natural curiosity becomes their best teacher. We strive to combine nature, science and animals in an interactive way to spark curiosity and a desire to learn. Through this contest we want to inspire young scientists,  artists and writers to look at the world around them, choose something that interests them and find a way to communicate that interest to others through different types of media.

The Theme for our 2012 competition is yet to be announced.  Please check back in September for complete information.

The theme for our 2011 contest was:

"Animals Enrich Our World so We Should Enrich Theirs"

Who: Students in grades 2 through 10.  (Students may work individually or as a part of a team.)

How: Choose one of the following categories to learn more:

Informative Article - Write an informative article about an animal that you find interesting.

2 Dimensional Art - Create a work of art using animals as your theme

Invention - Invent an enrichment activity for an animal.

When:
Submit your entry by January 15th, 2011. Winners will be announced on February 15th, 2011 and will be included in the February 15th E-mail Newsletter.

Why: Because learning is fun and what better way to learn about something than to get involved.  You can also win some great prizes and have your picture, name and work published on our website. Your entry can help increase someone else's desire to learn more and help teach others about how animals are an integral part of our world.

Teachers, you may be eligible for a drawing to win money for your classroom.

Here is a chance to encourage independent learning and involve your students in a project about a subject that so many people love, ANIMALS.  As a way of saying thank you we will enter any participating teacher in a drawing to win $100 to be used for art and/or science supplies for the classroom. Click for more information.

Description and Guidelines for the Informative Article Contest:

It has been said that we conserve what we love.  We love what we understand.  We understand what we take the time to learn about.  For the purpose of this contest, an informative article should be no more than two pages and be written in such a way to inspire others to want share what they have learned and spark a desire to learn more about a particular kind of animal.

To begin:  Choose an animal or animal group that you find interesting and write a one to two page article, full of fun facts and information that you believe will spark someone else's interest to learn more. You may include pictures, captions, comments and lots of fun information.

Description and Guidelines for the 2 Dimensional Art Contest:

Create an original work of art inspired by your love of animals and this year's contest theme.  "Animals enrich our world so we should enrich theirs"  Art work may be in colored pencil, pen, marker, paint (watercolor, acrylic or oil), or collage not to exceed 12" x 14". No regular pencil please, as it will not reproduce well.

Description and Guidelines for the Invention Contest:

Animals need adequate food, shelter and water as well as physical and mental stimulation to ensure their good health.  Providing an animal with physical and/or mental stimulation is called animal enrichment.

Have you ever wondered how to make the life of pets around the world more fun? Here is your chance to make a difference. Invent an enrichment program for a specific animal and enter it in our contest.  Your entry should include an actual model, picture or video of your enrichment activity, a written explanation of your project and how it is intended to help enrich the life of an animal and instructions for duplicating or making your projects. (So that someone else can do the same thing.)
